Space Jam's Timothy Harris to Pen Imagi's CG Astro Boy

The Hong-Kong-based IMAGI Studios has announced that Timothy Harris (Space Jam, Kindergarten Cop, Twins, Trading Places) will write its computer-graphics film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy manga. In IMAGI's press release, Harris says, "Astro Boy is a dream animation project. It's a classic, as timeless as Oliver Twist, set in the most incredible futuristic world. It's one of those stories that moves you emotionally while being funny and entertaining at the same time.” David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing the film, and Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company are planning to release the film worldwide in 2009.

IMAGI had previously announced that writer Robert Mark Kamen (Karate Kid, The Fifth Element) would write its separate Gatchaman film, with the collaboration of writer-producer Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series, Lost).

CG Astro Boy Images Appear on IMAGI's Job Fair Posters

Hong Kong studio recruits artists for upcoming projects
Felix Ip, one of IMAGI's directors for the Jikuu Boukenki Zentrix computer graphics series and a producer of last year's TMNT movie, has posted images for his company's job recruitment posters and banner, including three with Astro Boy. IMAGI is producing a computer-graphics film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's manga robot boy. The art style in the posters does not necessarily reflect the final version that will appear in the film. Warner Brothers and The Weinstein Company are planning to release the film internationally in 2009. IMAGI is holding its job fair in Hong Kong during February 23-24 weekend.

Freddie Highmore, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy in IMAGI, Summit's film

IMAGI Studios has announced that Summit Entertainment (Michael Clayton, American Pie, Babel) will release its 2009 computer-graphics film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy manga worldwide except in Japan, Hong Kong, and China. IMAGI itself will handle the distribution in those three regions.

IMAGI Studio also announced that the cast now includes Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, National Treasure), Donald Sutherland (M*A*S*H, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Dirty Sexy Money), Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Producers, The Birdcage), Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Underworld, Pirates of the Caribbean) and Eugene Levy (A Mighty Wind, American Pie, Curious George). As previously announced, Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Arthur and the Invisibles) will play the title role of Astro Boy, a robot abandoned by its inventor and raised by a kind professor to protect the world.

Space Jam's Timothy Harris is writing the film, and Flushed Away's David Bowers is directing. Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company were previously announced as the film's global distributors, but no new word has been given on their current status on the project.
